I have been a research specialist in the area of complex interventions for over 25 years. Currently at Birmingham University where I took up my post in 2017 to after 20 years at Oxford University where I was Professor of Psycho-social Intervention. My work is methodologically based in three main areas: Systematic Reviews, Trials (many of them randomised) and Methods Advances in Complex Interventions.

Topically, my work is wide ranging and includes Sleep (on which I originally did my doctorate), Education Interventions for Children, Empowerment Interventions for Women in LMICs, as well as broader policy advice for policymakers.
I am a member of the Cross-Whitehall Trial Advice Panel based at Cabinet Office, and I am also an Affiliate Professor at the University of Malta. I serve on the Advisory Panel for two “What Works Centres” -Wellbeing and Children’s Social Care.
Currently, I sit on NIHR and ESRC panels and am an Editor for the International Journal of Social Welfare and for the Developmental, Psychosocial and Learning Problems Group (DPLPG) of the Cochrane Collaboration.
